Out of more than 600 applicants, junior Geography major Quincy Yangh, has been named one of the select few students to be a finalist for the Truman Scholarship. This highly competitive, merit-based award program is awarded to the top 55 – 65 U.S. citizen applicants who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for a career in public service.
As a very challenging endeavor, Yangh expresses the hard work and dedication required in becoming a Truman finalist. “To say the Truman application is exhausting would be an understatement. It requires a great deal of patience, mentorship, and drive,” says Yangh. “But despite the stress, it has gifted me with the opportunity to question my trajectory in life. And in doing so, I have a deeper understanding of myself and how I want to change the world.”
Yangh credits his Truman progress and success to the faculty and staff of Gustavus Adolphus College. “I am grateful to Pamela Kittelson, Carly Overfelt, the Department of Geography, and the Center for Inclusive Excellence. I wouldn’t be where I am without their support and guidance,” says Yangh.
Yangh is optimistic and looking forward to the next stage of the Truman selection process. “I am excited for the interview phase and to meet the cohort of Truman finalists.”
